Pipefitter: What is the work like? A pipefitter is a tradesman who positions, assembles, fabricates, maintains and repairs piping systems which may carry water, steam, chemicals or fuel used in heating, cooling, lubricating and other processes. Typical industrial process pipe operates under high pressure, which requires metals such as carbon steel and many different alloys, and where connections and joints are usually made by welding. This type of work differs from that of a plumber who normally concentrates on pipework carrying water, gas and sewage from commercial and residential properties and which operates at much lower pressures. As well as installing new pipework, fitters also work on existing plant such as is found in oil refineries, chemical and pharmaceutical plants and power stations etc.. They will work both indoors and outdoors, on physically demanding tasks that often require working at heights and lifting heavy equipment.
