Advanced Apprenticeship

The Doosan Babcock Apprenticeship scheme is programmed over a 36 month period and leads to an NVQ level 3 in Welding, Erecting, Mechanical Fitting, Pipefitting or Project Control. In addition during the 36 month period you will also complete an NVQ level 2 in Supporting Engineering activities.

Each year approximately 60-70 Advanced Apprentices join the scheme and undertake a structured training programme. All off-the-job training is delivered in an environment which prepares Apprentices for their site placement.

The scheme consists of three main elements:

  • Trade specific training delivered at the Doosan Babcock Centre of Excellence Training Department, Tipton, West Midlands. (This consists of an 18 week programme learning the skills and underpinning knowledge required for site placement)
  • Block release study at Leeds, Hull or Warwick College (This consists of 14 weeks block release in blocks of 2 or 3 weeks)
  • On-the-job training on site at various locations (mainly power stations) around the UK.

We run schemes for five separate "trades"

Welder:

Steel Erector:

Mechanical Fitter:

Pipefitter:

Project Control (new for 2009!):

You can apply to be considered for more than one trade.

If you have gained Grade C's or above in English Language, Maths and ICT, coupled with enthusiasm, commitment and flexibility you could be eligible to gain a placement on our Advanced Apprenticeship Scheme.

Alex Morgan (2nd year Apprentice, 2008) says:

"The apprenticeship is a good opportunity to become a skilled tradesman in a growing industry. The instructors are experienced and have been supportive and you get to train on the latest equipment and tools in the new Welding School. I think the training will give me the skills and knowledge to gain job opportunities both in the UK and worldwide, and I often encourage my friends to apply for the apprenticeship as you get to meet new people from all around the country."
